I was surfing the web tonight and stumbled accross this website and spent quite awhile reading this guys stories. He takes photos of people on the New York Subwaysome very weird and interesting. I think it stirred the nosy side of me and I had fun laughing at some of the people.

My Movie Review... HOSTEL

On Friday night Brett and I decided to go to a movie and for those people that know me and my taste in films and books they know that there wouldn't be a lot of discussion over which film to see... Yes the most gruesome horror movie out at the moment - HOSTEL.

1 hour into the movie and I was wondering when they were going to get rid of the topless women and start showing the blood and gore but hey I'm pretty sure Brett was enjoying it.
However once the blood started flowing you got to see it all and Quentin Tarantino didn't hold back, it was definitely the most gruesome movie I've ever seen but I was a little bit disappointed with the scare factor, if it had only had me sitting on the edge of my seat and looking over my shoulder it would have made it the whole package.

Overall I give the film a 7 out of 10 purely for it's blood and guts, and definitely recommend it to like minded horror freaks. If you're the type that gets a little queasy go and see Bambi.

ITALY - Part Two, When in Rome

Rome was awesome, I can't wait to go back one day. Luckily Wendy and I were welcomed to Rome by this freaky old guy making kissy noises at us, urggghhhh. We found our hostel easily it was quite a nice place really quiet and close to the train station, and supermarket.

Once we got our room and settled in we decided to go for an afternoon walk just to see a few of the near by sights. We took our map and wandered around for a bit and found our selves almost at the coliseum. The best thing we found about Rome was that you could see so many things it wouldn't cost you a thing.

We headed out and went through Piazza della Republica and went into this amazing old church, there is an awesome fountain on the Piazza. We wandered down via Nazionale and missed a military parade by minutes, we continued walking and went down some steps that opened out into a large Piazza with a massive white stone building in the center and along one side were some ruins of ancient Rome and we realised that we had almost walked all the way to the coliseum.

I think that from there we went to check out the Trevi fountain, which was gorgeous but there was sooo many people there you had to fight to get a decent look at the fountain.

We then headed back to our hostel and as we went through Piazza della Republica we saw this amazing display of birds flying around in flocks before nesting for the night. It had been a long day but we headed back to bed.

ITALY - Part One, Pompeii

Because most of my friends and family have only heard parts about mine and Wendy's trip to Italy I thought I'd post a part of the trip each week. so you can all get the whole story. Wendy I hope you'll help me write the other posts since you kept a journal.

Well where to begin. After a couple of days in Scotland catching up with family we were finally on our way to Italy. Our flight arrived in Naples in the evening so our first night was spent trying to find the backpackers, which after taking one big wrong turn and walking for a while we turned around and went back in the right direction and eventually found the place (only after Wendy lost the argument over who would try to talk to the locals for the first time).

That night I was maulled by mosquito's but was to excited about going to Pompeii to care!! (Ok then Wendy, after a little whinging). We got some advice from the people at the hostel and the recommended the bus to Pompeii because it leaves every 30mins... 1 hour and a bit later the bus turned up.

arriving at pompeii made us forget about all the dramas and difficulties of getting there. This was what I came to Italy to see, and my camera bore the brunt of it. Pompeii is a massive city and seeing the excavations you could get the feel of how they lived.

My highlights of Pompeii were:
  • The frescos and tiles (some in relatively good condition)
  • The forum and public areas
  • The mummified people
  • The brothel sign and picture of the man with the huge #*$! (see the pics)
  • Stadium

After about 3 hours maybe more Wendy convinced me to leave and we decided to leave past the stadium and the last thing we saw of the city was of Mt Vesuvius overlooking Pompeii. Check out the picture in 'Things to see and do'.

Because we had been walking around for hours we were starving so we tried our first of many Italian pizzas to come, a plain margarita not the best pizza in Italy but it filled the gap

We took the train back to Naples and it was starting to get dark so we walked back to the hostel that city is crazy though people everywhere, scooters and cars cramming down these ridiculously tiny streets.

I don't know if it was just that we were just overwhelmed or what but we later decided that Naples wasn't our cup of tea BUT there was still plenty more of Italy to come. The next day we caught the train to Rome. But that's a story for another day.

Things to see and do (before I die)

Going to Italy has always been a life long dream of mine and after my sister and I went there in November 2005 I thought that I should start writing a list of the places I want to visit next (well before I die anyway) in no particular order.

Egypt (see the pyramids)
Greece
China (see the great wall)
Hawaii
Niagara Falls
Vietnam
African Safari
Edinburgh
The Grand Canyon
See more of Italy
Switzerland

I'm sure there are more places but that's the start of my list, these are the places I've already been lucky enough to visit.

Scotland (Oban, Glasgow, Loch Ness) 1998, 1999, 2005
Vanuatu, Nov 2000
Fiji, 2005
Dubai, UAE, 2004, 2005
England (Salisbury and Stone henge, London), 2005
Maldives, 2005
East Timor, 2002
Darwin, Australia, 2005

And of course I have seen a lot of New Zealand but not all of it. If you want to give any advice or add comments about places I should see just click the comments button below.
